FPM Now Licensed to Provide Professional Geology Services in New York State!
January 2019 - After a nearly 20-year process, on November 21, 2014 New York State enacted legislation requiring licenses for the practice of professional geology. The law includes license requirements for both individual geologists and firms that offer professional geology services. Professional licensing for individuals commenced on November 21, 2016 and ten FPM employees, including six geologists in our Oneida office, three geologists in our Ronkonkoma office, and our President, Gaby Atik, have now obtained licenses to practice as Professional Geologists (PGs) in New York State.
FPM also filed required documentation with the New York State Education Department, Office of the Professions to obtain a Certificate of Authorization to Provide Professional Geology Services in New York State. This process included a requirement to change the name of our professional services company to FPM Engineering & Geology, P.C., which was accomplished on December 12, 2018. FPM is now fully qualified to offer Professional Geology services throughout New York State.
Professional geologist expertise is often required for projects conducted under the oversight of New York State agencies, including the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), Department of Health (DOH), and Department of Transportation (DOT). FPM’s fully-qualified staff has been providing these services for many years and we are now fully licensed to continue!
FPM Group, Ltd Acquired by Olgoonik Development Corporation LLC
April 30, 2018- Olgoonik Development LLC (Olgoonik) acquired FPM Remediations, Inc., FPM Group, Ltd., and their associated assets, collectively “FPM”. “Olgoonik is excited about the acquisition. The FPM companies are a great addition to the Olgoonik corporate family and share our strong commitment to customer satisfaction,” said Marty Miksh, president of Olgoonik Development Operations. Miksh added, “they bring new capabilities, and strong past performance and client relationships. We look forward to working with FPM’s exceptional management team and personnel in serving their existing clients while supporting their expansion across Olgoonik’s footprint and augmenting Olgoonik’s already strong capabilities.”
Olgoonik is an established provider of quality environmental services for government and commercial clients with extensive experience working in Alaska. The acquisition of FPM expands these services, geographically across the continental United States and into the new areas of geophysics and military munitions response programs. FPM also provides facilities engineering services to complement Olgoonik’s engineering and construction services.
Olgoonik does not plan any foreseeable changes to operations at FPM. FPM Group, Ltd. and FPM Remediations, Inc. will operate as separate subsidiaries under Olgoonik Development and Gaby A. Atik, the previous president of FPM Remediations, Inc., will lead the operations of all the FPM companies.
In responding to the acquisition, FPM’s president, Gaby Atik said, “FPM looks forward to our future as a member of the Olgoonik family. We found that, like FPM, Olgoonik culture is fueled by the belief that our operations must be of the highest quality; our employees, which are our best asset, must be qualified and principled; and our commitment to safety and our client’s mission is unconditional.”
Emerging Contaminants – PFAS and 1,4-Dioxane
December 2018 - In response to the discovery of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and 1,4-dioxane in drinking water supplied from groundwater aquifers, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) recently began requiring sampling for PFAS and 1,4-dioxane at remedial sites under their jurisdiction. PFAS and 1,4-dioxane are found in a wide variety of consumer products and are highly soluble, which results in their widespread presence in groundwater and complicates sampling as equipment and clothing containing these compounds must be avoided. Laboratory analyses are complicated by the same considerations, with the added issue of having to achieve very low reporting limits, usually in the parts-per-trillion range.
Through our work at NYSDEC remedial program sites, as well as our experience with federal clients, including the Air Force Civil Engineer Center and the Department of the Army, FPM has significant experience with PFAS and 1,4-dioxane investigations. Our investigations have included soil and groundwater sampling at multiple current and former manufacturing and commercial businesses and at airport facilities, with all work conducted under NYSDEC, USEPA, or other regulatory agency oversight. FPM has also designed and is now operating a PFAS remediation system to treat wastewater from aircraft deicing, hangar maintenance, and aircraft washing operations at an Air National Guard Base in New York prior to discharge to the municipal sewage treatment plant. As new regulations and groundwater standards are developed for PFAS and 1,4-dioxane, FPM will remain at the forefront of investigation and remediation of these emerging contaminants.
Timely Petroleum Spill Closure Facilitates Redevelopment
2017 - FPM Group successfully closed a #6 fuel oil spill at a former hospital site that was targeted for redevelopment. Over a period of several months FPM delineated the nature and extent of contamination, obtained NYS Department of Environmental Conservation approval for the remedial approach, and completed remediation. The remedial approach included excavating nearly 4,000 tons of impacted soil and vacuuming over 4,500 gallons of fuel oil from the water table surface, with all wastes properly disposed offsite. Once the fuel oil was confirmed removed, the excavation was backfilled with clean soil, leaving the site clear for redevelopment. The NYSDEC approved the completed work and closed the spill. FPM’s remedial approach saved the client nearly $500,000 relative to other remedial approaches and resulted in prompt spill closure, achieving the client’s objectives for this project.
