Renovation of Pool Filtration System at Jones Beach West Bathhouse

CLIENT

New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation, Wantagh, NY

Designed an upgrade of the recirculation, filtration, and drainage systems of the pools to hydraulically separate the 15,000 square foot Main Pool from the 5,000 square foot Wading Pool to form two independent systems. Follow-on projects included liner replacement, piping, and waterside surface repairs.

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN

Net Zero Energy Use Building at Jones Beach Energy & Nature Center

CLIENT

New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation, Wantagh, NY

Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and Fire Protection (MEPF) and site design for 12,000 square-foot net zero building at Jones Beach West End. Systems included closed loop geoexchange and water-to-water reversible heat-pump. Roof mounted solar panel array and battery energy storage system helps achieve the net-zero functionality.

MASTER PLANNING

Master Plan for Bethpage State Park Golf Maintenance Area

CLIENT

New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation, Farmingdale, NY

Developed a Master Plan to evaluate existing buildings and operations for the Golf Maintenance Area central to the upkeep of five public golf courses. The Master Plan, including detailed construction cost estimates, provided our client with a framework to proceed with design and construction for implementing renovations in three phases, allowing the facility’s day-to-day operations and the use of all five golf courses to continue throughout construction.

HVAC Upgrades for Bethpage State Park Clubhouse

CLIENT

New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation, Farmingdale, NY

Designed HVAC upgrades for the 70,000 square-foot Bethpage State Park Clubhouse. The design entailed a modular chiller, modular cooling towers, economizer installations on existing air handlers, and a control system replacement. These upgrades allowed for an increase in system redundancy while decreasing energy usage, maintenance costs, and noise without impacting the aesthetics of the Park.

SITE DESIGN

Kingsboro Psychiatric Center Roadway Improvements

CLIENT

New York State Office of Mental Health, Brooklyn, NY

Designed the rehabilitation of the campus roadway infrastructure, pavements, and main gate for Kingsboro Psychiatric Center. Provided project scope, conditions assessment, options, and estimates. The project ultimately included reconfiguration of entry, repaving of roadways and parking lots, and roadway and parking lot lighting upgrades.

ARCHITECTURE & ENGINEERING

St. James Post Office Expansion

CLIENT

U.S. Postal Service, St. James, NY

Provided A/E design for a complete renovation of the existing building and the complete reconfiguration of the site. The building area nearly doubled in size. Work included architectural, structural, civil, mechanical, and electrical systems including fire alarm, intrusion detection, and CCTV security systems. An in-depth phasing plan was included to assure that postal operations would continue uninterrupted throughout construction.

East Norwich Fire Department Addition

CLIENT

East Norwich Volunteer Fire Company, East Norwich, NY

Created “Construction Justification Analysis” wherein the occupancy, equipment housing, and storage needs of the firehouse were quantified and compared to applicable regulations and A/E guidelines. The need for an addition was demonstrated through this analysis and the building and site were analyzed to determine the optimum site, location, and configuration of the addition to meet the current and projected long-term (20-year planning horizon) needs of the department, within a designated construction cost limitation.

ELEVATOR MODERNIZATION

Rehabilitate Elevators – Shirley Chisholm State Office Building

CLIENT

New York State Office of General Services

Provide MEP/FP services for elevator modernization projects. Provided field inspections, capital planning reports, code analysis, construction contract drawings/specifications, and construction phase services to provide the required HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing, Fire Alarm, and Fire Sprinkler modifications to modernize hydraulic and traction type elevators at dozens of locations.

SITE LIGHTING & RENOVATIONS

Modernize Campus Lighting and Paving Replacements at UUCSR

CLIENT

Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock, Manhasset, NY

Provided the design for multiple asphalt paving replacement projects at this former estate on Long Island’s Gold Coast which now houses the UUCSR Worship Center, Conference Center, School and support building surrounded by roadways and parking lots. Provided design to provide energy efficient LED lighting throughout the campus including contemporary street pole fixtures at streets and parking areas, low bollard fixtures at pedestrian pathways and a Remembrance Garden and ornamental decorative lighting posts at the original historic mansion now utilized as a Conference Center. Design incorporated the reuse of existing wiring, while also updating the lighting controls to provide significant capital and energy cost savings.

Replace Water Closets and Flushometers Eastern Correctional Facility

CLIENT

New York State Office of General Services

FPM provided design and construction phase services for the replacement of all water closets and lavatories with comby units within the inmate cells of the South Hall of Building 3, including replacement and reconfiguration of all domestic water and waste piping. The work also included retrofitting the pipe chase walkways with handrails. The Building 3 comby units were highly customized to accommodate constraints imposed by the over 100-year old building. In Building 4, the replacement comby units were specified as angled-type to permit increased maneuverability within the cell.

Refrigeration

Renovations for the Cook/Chill Production Center

CLIENT

New York State Office of General Services

Provided professional services for 48 refrigeration circuits. Following a detailed system assessment, FPM provided a scope of work that met the facility’s efficiency, reliability, lifecycle, and expandability targets. The design was completed and phased to minimize any disruptions in facility operation during construction. Replaced the refrigeration rack system and made energy efficiency upgrades to an ice water system.

Water Treatment

Water System Upgrade at NYSDOT Rest Area, Owego, NY

CLIENT

New York State Office of General Services

FPM performed pre-design services including on-site investigation, water quality sampling and inspection of the existing aging system to adequately define the water quality issues and develop appropriate repairs. We prepared detailed design drawings and specifications for construction of recommended upgrades which included construction of a new building to house the water treatment system, a 1,000 gallon hydropneumatic tank, modern chlorination system, and appropriate work space for the required operations and maintenance of the system.

Structural Repairs at St. Bartholomew’s Church

CLIENT

Episcopal Diocese, Long Island, NY

While performing a Conditions Assessment, FPM found that the church's truss members supporting the roof structure had become disconnected from the columns and were dry-rotted. An emergency project was implemented to provide temporary shoring of the roof structure. Once the structure was stabilized, FPM performed comprehensive inspections to facilitate the required repairs. Construction Phase Services ensured that the repairs were completed in conformance with the construction documents.

Upgrade Heating Systems Connetquot State Park Preserve

Preservation

Provided energy efficient upgrades to the historic building at Connetquot State Park. This included providing a perimeter hydronic heating system with convectors and condensing boilers to replace the existing original steam radiators and fireplaces. Insulated the crawlspace and attic, sealed fireplace flues, and enclosed domestic and heating water piping to address general building deficiencies and increase the effectiveness of the thermal envelope.

Repair Exterior Envelope and Upgrade HVAC Systems at AASF in MacArthur Airport

CLIENT

New York State Department of Military and Naval Affairs

Conducted energy conservation investigations of HVAC systems and the building thermal envelope including infrared testing at this 80,000 SF Army Aviation Support Facility. Provided design to replace lower roof and insulate and seal exterior walls at the Hangar and Drill Hall. HVAC distribution systems were upgraded, HVAC units replaced, two energy recovery ventilators (ERV) were provided, destratification fans were added in the Drill Hall and Hangar, and a building management system (BMS) to control HVAC systems was provided.

Replace Roofs & Repair Façade at Bedford C.F. Building 26

CLIENT

New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision

Provided the complete design for an exterior envelope renovation project at this 20,000 SF Power Plant Building originally constructed in 1901. The masonry parapet walls and decorative wood cornices were reconstructed, gutters and downspouts were replaced and an EPDM roofing system was installed. The roof of a concrete fuel tank storage vault was repaired and coated with a liquid waterproofing system. Brick masonry facades were renovated, repaired, repointed and cleaned. Concrete vault facades were repaired, reinforced and coated.

Solar

50 KW Photovoltaic System at Blydenburgh Landfill Complex

CLIENT

Islip Resource Recovery Agency

FPM began with site selection and determining how best to use the electrical energy to be generated by the solar array system. We determined the system could power two of the blower motors used to extract the methane gas from the capped landfill. This allowed the use of net-metering, and effectively raised the energy expense offset by the solar array system by over 350% versus a direct connection to the utility grid, while also allowing the use of a renewable resource for landfill operations.

Standby Generator for Town Pump Stations

CLIENT

Town of Smithtown

FPM provided design, bid, and construction phase services for the provision of diesel-fueled, emergency generators and associated equipment to serve as an automatically activated standby electrical power source for three stormwater pump stations. FPM’s work included assessment of the electrical load at all sites, assessment of site conditions, generator selection to match electrical load, design modifications to the pump station controls, calculation of fuel tank size, site modifications to maintain serviceability, bid phase services, and construction phase services.

Replace Fueling Station at Maintenance Facility

Preservation

Evaluated the feasibility of removing existing gasoline/diesel underground storage tanks and related fueling systems at a wide variety of state park facilities and replacing them with above-ground storage tanks (ASTs) and new fueling systems based on the needs at each location. Provided field inspections, conceptual site plans, construction drawings and specifications, and construction phase services through completion. The design incorporated remote inventory management and DEC-compliant leak detection systems.

Storm Hardening/Flood-proofing

Flood-Proofing at Addabbo Health Center

CLIENT

Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery New York Rising Program

As part of The Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery (GOSR) New York Rising Program, FPM was tasked with flood-proofing the existing 15,000 SF Medical Facility. The design incorporated both manually and automatically deployed flood barriers and a system of passive flood barriers masquerading as planters. At two nearby clinics of the Health Center, FPM performed A/E services for the provision of standby generators to permit these buildings to serve as shelters during future storm events.
